According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), a family of four spends anywhere between $546 - $1,061 per month (on the low side) and anywhere between $693 - $1,398 (on the high side) per month. Since grocery shopping is a significant expense for most families and households, here are six ways you can potentially make your next trip to the grocery store more affordable.
Don’t be fooled by brand names. Just because something is brand name, doesn’t necessarily make it better. Name brands often produce products with a retailers label on it, and they’re usually a better price. Just be sure to check the ingredients to make sure you’re getting the same product.
Don’t go to the store hungry. This is probably one of the biggest mistakes made when grocery shopping. Many of us visit the grocery store after work and before dinner, which is when we start to get hungry. If you’re shopping for groceries when you’re hungry, you’ll likely end up purchasing more than you need.
Make a list (and stick to it). No matter how good you think your memory is, make a list. Not only will it ensure you don’t forget the things you need, it’ll more importantly deter you from buying things you don’t need.
Beware of eye-level shelves. Since we tend to look at items that are at eye level, grocery stores oftentimes place the more expensive items on the shelves we see first. When shopping, look at higher and lower shelves for cheaper items.
Get ready to pay the price for pre-cut fruit. You could easily cut up that pineapple or watermelon at home. Not only is pre-cut fruit more expensive, but you also get less of it than if you were to buy the whole fruit and cut it up yourself.
You’re also paying the price for pre-washed, pre-packaged salad. Yes, it’s convenient, but it also costs three times the price. If you buy your own head of lettuce, wash and trim it right away to have it ready to use, and you won’t even notice the difference.
