We’re almost constantly “connected” and online nowadays- via our smartphones, tablets, laptops, and even smart-watches. But, your devices pack a lot of info about you and your friends and family, such as contacts, photos, videos, location, health and even financial data. In honor of Cyber Security Awareness Month, here are some tips for managing your privacy:
Secure your devices – Use strong passwords, passcodes or Touch ID features to lock your devices. These security measures can help protect your information in the event your device is lost or stolen.
Disable WiFi Bluetooth when not in use – Some retailers look for devices with WiFi or Bluetooth turned on to track your movements while you are within range.
Only keep what you need – many of us download apps for specific purposes, such a planning a vacation and no longer need the app afterwards. We recommend deleting all apps you no longer use as a best security practice.
Keep your mobile device and apps up to date – having the most up-to-date security software, web browser, operating system and apps is the best line of defense against viruses, malware, and other online threats.
Limit what you do on WiFi hotspots – any public wireless network or hotspot is not secure, which means anyone could potentially see what you are doing on your mobile device if you are connected to the network. Avoid logging in to accounts like email and your financial accounts on these networks. If you need access to information like this on the go, consider using a virtual private network (VPN) or a personal/mobile hotspot as it’s a more secure connection.
