Summer Safety Doesn't Take a Summer Break7/2/2018

It’s time for swimming, boat rides and road trips. But, before you take a dip, head out into the open water or take your brand-new motorcycle for a spin, you’ll want to ensure you and your loved ones have the proper insurance in place in the event of an unforeseen mishap. After all, safety doesn’t take a summer break! Here are some things to consider:

Boat Insurance

According to the Insurance Information Institute, home insurance or renters insurance may provide all the coverage you need. For larger and faster boats, or personal watercraft – like Jet Skis – you’ll need a separate marine policy. Premiums can depend on your boating background, type of boat and where you’re planning on using it. The National Boat Owners Association says your age, credit history, driving record, boating certifications and whether you own or rent a home can also affect your policy cost.

Motorcycle Insurance

Thinking about revving up your summer fun with a motorcycle? Before you do, weigh out your coverage options first. All motorcyclists are required to have liability coverage for property damage and bodily injury that may be caused in an accident. Are you only a seasonal rider? You may want to inquire about a “lay-up” policy, which suspends all coverage during the winter months except for comprehensive. This can help cut the cost of insurance.

Vehicle Insurance

What screams summer more than a road trip? Be sure to understand your own auto insurance policy before you accept the rental company’s policy. The insurance that the car rental company typically includes, among other things, liability protection for lawsuits, personal accident insurance for medical or ambulance needs and personal effects coverage for the theft of your belongings in the car. However, you may not need all that - your auto policy may already provide some car rental coverage.
