Paper Checks Are Ending for Federal Benefits—Here’s What You Need to Know

Starting September 30, 2025, the federal government will stop sending paper checks for most federal benefits, including Social Security, SSI, and federal tax refunds. If you currently receive your benefits by check, you’ll need to switch to an electronic payment method to avoid delays.

What You Need To Do:
Direct Deposit – The fastest and safest way to receive your benefits. Have your Social Security payment deposited directly into your Sandia Area savings or checking account. No mail or trips to deposit checks each month.
Don’t have a bank account? Open a Sandia Area Peak Plus Checking Account and set up direct deposit to enjoy all the benefits of membership—including getting paid up to two days early.
Learn more about your options and direct deposit here: https://www.ssa.gov/deposit/

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
While you may still receive payments for a short time, the Social Security Administration could hold future distributions until you provide electronic payment information. Limited exceptions exist, but most people will need to switch.

How to Set Up Direct Deposit with Sandia Area:
Savings Account: Use your 10-digit Sandia Area savings account number (no spaces or dashes).
Checking Account: Use your 10-digit checking number, found at the bottom of your checks or in Online Banking.
Sandia Area Routing Number: 307070047
