School is almost out, and many families are busy planning their summer vacation. Remember, having a fun family vacation doesn’t have to put you into debt. We put together some tips that will help your vacation budget go further, without sacrificing on fun.

Utilize these calendars to find free or inexpensive events where you are visiting. Plus, it’s a great way to explore a new city and experience it as a local would.

Dine Out For Lunch, Not Dinner

Often, you can get the same meal options for lunch, just in smaller portions and at a smaller price. When looking for a hotel, look for one with a kitchen that will allow you prepare your own dinners.

Consider Camping

See if there are campgrounds that are near where you are visiting. This is a great way to save on costs, as many campgrounds are under $30 a night. More and more campgrounds offer amenities, so you don’t have to sacrifice warm showers and WiFi to be frugal. Plus, think of all the family memories you will create by gathering around the campfire and making s’mores.

Research Travel Options

Depending on the destination, and how much vacation time you have, flying may be your only option. But if you have the extra travel time to spare, compare the costs of driving, or even taking the train.

You don’t have to leave the state of New Mexico to find fun activities. Planning vacations in our home state can significantly reduce travel costs, as well as support our own local businesses and economy. New Mexico has much to offer, no matter your interests. Enjoy being outdoors? There’s White Sands, Bandelier, and Carlsbad Caverns. Interested in art? Santa Fe and Taos are perfect.
